On June 26, 2026, Silpakorn University received the royal trophy from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, winning the Platinum Award at the "Thailand Research Expo 2026" held at Centara Grand at CentralWorld, Bangkok. The winning project is titled "Innovation in Synthesizing Bio-Melanin Fibers from Acidic Soil Derived from Royal Initiatives in the Chaipattana Foundation's Land to Create Fashion Products Promoting Grassroots Economy Entrepreneurs," under the theme "From the Sourness of Soil to the Asset of Wisdom." It was categorized under the group "Research and Innovation for Thai Economic Development with the BCG Economic Model." The lead researchers are Asst. Prof. Dr. Khajornsak Nakpan and Prof. Dr. Supavee Sirinkraporn from the Faculty of Decorative Arts, Silpakorn University.
This research integrates knowledge in art and design with science and technology to develop an innovation in synthesizing bio-melanin fibers from acidic soil. It elevates acidic soil resources into valuable, eco-friendly biological materials and extends to the development of unique textile and fashion products. Embracing the concept of transforming a "Soil Crisis" into "Bio-Fashion" based on royal initiatives, the project aims to transfer this knowledge to local communities. By supporting grassroots economy entrepreneurs to develop competitive products, the initiative will ultimately lead to job creation, income generation, and the sustainable strengthening of the grassroots economy.
